Learn in a Collegial Atmosphere. As AIHS trade/study mission attendance is by invitation only, delegates are assured of a collegial atmosphere of learning with the highest-level officers of health organizations. Each delegation is limited to 50 participants, enabling all delegates to be on a first-name basis with their peers by the end of the week.
Tour the Health Facilities. Each mission includes tours of health facilities, such as public or private hospitals, surgicenters, and clinics. Additionally, delegates are free to explore both the riches of the healthcare system as well as the challenges in the countryside or right around the city corner, talking to residents and leaders alike.
Understand the Host Country’s Health System, Talk With Their Leaders. As most of the countries visited by AIHS trade/study missions comprise both public and private system elements, delegates can be assured of obtaining not only comprehensive knowledge of the inner workings of the system and leaders’ challenges, but as importantly, take-home lessons to apply new and creative ideas that may change care processes within their own organizations.
The delegates are introduced to the host health system through a series of interactive and didactic presentations by healthcare leaders, such as ministers of health, presidents of private and public insurance concerns and members of the local health provider community.
Explore Each Country’s Unique Culture. The delegation is also invited to attend optional tours, discovering some of the historical and national heritage that define the health system. For instance, an understanding of Maori culture in New Zealand helps delegates shape how the health system’s attitude of egalitarian healthcare has developed.
Bring Your Learnings Back Home. Every country visited by the Academy offers valuable lessons that can be applied to U.S. organizations. Delegates of previous AIHS missions very often find both pearls for changing processes within their own hospitals, health plans or other entity and new ideas for expanding services or adding value for their clients, patients and members.
